Extractions

Helping you maintain your teeth for a lifetime is always our first objective at Appleton Dental Care. With that said, however, there are certain circumstances that may require a tooth extraction in order to maintain your oral health.

If you need a tooth removed, Dr. Carlson or Dr. Giang-Carlson can guide you through the process from start to finish, so you’ll be working with the team you know and trust.

Wisdom Teeth

One of the most common extraction procedures is the removal of wisdom teeth, or third molars. These are the last molars to arrive at the very back of your mouth behind your second molars.

Not all wisdom teeth need to be removed; however, there are a number of reasons why it may be necessary, such as:

  • They’re too far back in your mouth to properly brush and floss. If this is the case, they increase your risk of developing tooth decay or gum disease.
  • They come in at an odd angle that causes your other teeth to move and shift.
  • They don’t come in at all or remain impacted, which can lead to an infection.

For these reasons, Dr. Giang-Carlson may suggest that we remove your wisdom teeth in order to protect your oral health.

Dental Infections

If your tooth becomes infected due to an injury, decay, or fracture, beyond what root canal therapy can restore, you may need to have your tooth extracted.

A dental infection will not go away without treatment. In fact, it can progress to other critical areas of the body and cause even more tooth loss if it’s left untreated. If your infection has reached this critical point, we’ll discuss having your tooth removed with you.

Will My Tooth Extraction Hurt?

Learning that you need a tooth removed isn’t always the best news, and it may even cause feelings of anxiety for some patients; however, you can rest assured that our doctors will make every effort to help you feel comfortable and at ease during your procedure. Dental anesthetics will ensure that you don’t feel anything, while nitrous oxide can be used for our patients who feel fear or anxiety.

Nitrous oxide is a gas that’s administered through a mask worn during your procedure. It works quickly to help you relax and feel at ease while also leaving your system as soon as the mask is removed. Nitrous is safe for children and can be used during any type of procedure.

If you need to have a tooth extracted, you can rely on Appleton Dental Care to take great care of you throughout the entire procedure and recovery process. Give us a call today to learn more about how we can help you.
