Preventative Dentistry

At Appleton Dental Care, our practice is built on a foundation of prevention.

It is our hope that with routine dental cleanings and checkups, we can help you avoid most dental issues, and this is why we recommend regular six-month visits for most patients. Early detection of many dental issues typically results in less invasive treatments to restore your oral health.

Periodontal Health

With all the emerging information connecting your periodontal health with your overall health and well being, we can tell you that there’s never been a better time to take charge of your oral health.

It’s now understood that the bacteria that cause periodontal (gum) disease, which is essentially an infection of the bone and soft tissue that support your teeth, also can contribute to other serious health concerns such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke, and high blood pressure – and vice versa.

Periodontal disease is a condition we screen you for at every dental checkup, and when it’s detected in its early stage, gingivitis, it can typically be effectively managed, and in some cases reversed, with a thorough professional cleaning and improved home care. If you’ve recently noticed that your gums appear red and swollen or bleed when you brush your teeth, you may be suffering from gingivitis.

Periodontitis is the more advanced stage of gum disease where damage begins to occur. In this stage, you may require a deep cleaning below the gum tissue known as scaling and root planing to remove the buildup of plaque and tartar causing your infection. We may also recommend antibiotic therapy – and even surgery in some cases.

Appleton Dental Care is well equipped to help you manage any stage of gum disease you may be facing.

Additional Preventative Services

We may also recommend additional preventative treatments such as fluoride and dental sealants, especially for children.

Fluoride is a mineral that helps build and strengthen developing teeth. It also helps remineralize teeth that have been damaged by decay.

Dental sealants, which protect teeth from tooth decay and cavities, are protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces to protect the deep grooves in your teeth from the acids that cause tooth decay.

While we typically recommend these treatments for children, some adults may also benefit from fluoride and dental sealants as well.

Frequently Asked Questions

A sealant is a thin plastic coating we bond to the chewing surfaces of your molars in order to fill in grooves that may be more susceptible to decay. Sealants are a great option for protecting your teeth from cavities, and while we recommend that most children have them placed, some adult patients can benefit from dental sealants as well.

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that helps build and remineralize teeth. For children, fluoride is important to build a healthy foundation for their developing teeth, and we typically recommend fluoride treatments at their six-month cleaning and checkup visits. Fluoride can also help remineralize enamel that has been damaged by decay. Many of our adult patients who are naturally prone to cavities can benefit from periodic fluoride treatments.

At Appleton Dental Care, we believe that preventative care is the foundation for achieving and maintaining optimum oral health. Dental sealants and fluoride treatments are preventative services we offer to our patients to help them protect their oral health. When you invest in preventative services and come to your six-month cleaning and checkup appointments, we can help you avoid many dental issues and guard your oral health.
