Pediatric Dentistry

We welcome patients of all ages to Appleton Dental Care, and especially love to see children.

As parents themselves, Dr. Carlson and Dr. Giang-Carlson understand how important your child’s first dental visits are in setting them up for future success at their dental appointments. For this reason, we strive to keep every appointment with your child positive and fun for them. Our goal is for your kids to look forward to their dental visits.

Your Child’s First Dental Visit

We recommend that you bring your child into our office for their first dental visit by their first birthday or even after their first tooth arrives. Early dental care helps detect any developmental concerns early on, allows us to give parents good advice on their child’s oral health, and helps acclimate your child to our office and the instruments we use.

We encourage parents to lead by example and brush and floss with their child. When they see you brushing, they’ll want to follow suit. We also encourage parents to bring their little ones along to their own dental appointments so children can see that the dentist is not a scary place.

Some Additional Recommendations for Children

As your child gets older, Dr. Giang-Carlson may recommend fluoride treatments and dental sealants for them. Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that can not only help build your child’s developing teeth, but also protects them from tooth decay. A dental sealant is a tooth colored-resin that is placed in the deep grooves of the chewing surfaces of teeth. They work to protect small teeth from tooth decay and cavities.

If your child participates in sports, our doctors are happy to recommend the right mouth guard for their needs. We fabricate mouth guards here at Appleton Dental Care for efficiency and your convenience.

A Child-Friendly Environment

We hope that your child feels welcome at Appleton Dental Care, and we look forward to building a relationship with them. We take the time to explain the importance of oral health and exactly what we’re doing so they feel comfortable before we move forward with any procedure.

For children who feel fearful about their dental care, nitrous oxide may be an option to help relieve their anxiety. Nitrous is a breathable gas that is safe for children and can help them relax and feel at ease during a procedure. Nitrous leaves the system quickly, so it doesn’t interfere with any of their normal activities. If you feel it will help make them more comfortable, we’re happy to discuss using nitrous for your child if they struggle with anxiety or fear.

We look forward to meeting your child and encourage you to call us to schedule your next appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions

We love to see children at Appleton Dental Care. Dr. Carlson and Dr. Giang-Carlson are parents themselves, which helps them understand how important these first visits are for your child’s future success at the dental office. Our entire staff strives to make your child’s visits to our office pleasant and upbeat, and it’s our goal that they look forward to their dental appointments.

We recommend that you bring your child in for their first dental checkup six months after their first tooth erupts. This is typically around their first birthday but can vary with each child. These early visits not only allow us to begin establishing a relationship with your child, they also help us monitor their dental development. When we start early, we can make you aware of any issues we see early on, which typically allows for more effective and prompt treatment, if necessary.

We also encourage parents to bring their children in to their own dental appointments so your child can become comfortable with what happens during a typical dental visit and know that it’s not scary. We look forward to meeting your child and building a relationship!
